Overview in Art Education - Week 2


BIG IDEA: Identity
“Where Are You?” – How Individuals Relate to the Landscape

General Discussion Questions:
1.     Who am I? Who are we?
2.     How do we show others who we are?
3.     Do we have a single identity?
4.     What makes someone an artist?
5.     What aspects of your Identity are easily noticed? Which are hidden?
6.     To what extent is our Identity determined by the society in which we live?

Introduce: Maya Lin -- show images of her work

After Viewing:
1.     How does Maya Lin use shape to define a landscape?
2.     Compare her three-dimensional landscapes with traditional landscape painting with respect to the use of color, space, shape, and line.

Activity:
1.       Find a place in nature and design a piece of art that reflects the surrounding earth formations and other natural elements.
2.     Suggest alterations of the environment that would change the way people use the space.

You can:
-Create a detailed drawing or painting of the work of art
-Use Photoshop to depict the work of art
-Create a sculpture (smaller scale) of work of art
-Use mixed media to depict work of art (photography, drawing, painting, Photoshop, etc).

After Activity:
1.     Does the artwork have another function? (I.e. memorial, skating rink, playground, water fountain, etc)
2.     How does this piece of art reflect the surrounding environment in which we live?
